Stellenbosch
where old-world charm
meets upmarket sophistication
If ever there was a town that combined pastoral charm with comfort and convenience, it’s Stellenbosch. With a history going back as far as 1679, this little gem, situated 50km from Cape Town and close to the airport, oozes character. Oak-lined streets, old Dutch stone water furrows and a mix of Cape Dutch and late-Victorian architecture give the town an almost European feel, while the multiple views of the surrounding mountains and temperate winter-rainfall climate will give the international visitor a truly unique African experience.
Its 300-year old winemaking tradition and surplus of world-renowned wine farms hugging the town has long since established Stellenbosch as the centre of the continent’s wine industry. The importance of fine wine has also spilt over into a culture of excellent restaurants and a vibrant street café culture.
The presence of the University of Stellenbosch (jointly the oldest university in Sub-Saharan Africa) with its beautiful tree-lined campus gives the town a youthful vibrancy and intellectual vigour that are reflected in the many music venues, concert halls and contemporary art galleries.
In recent decades, an ongoing effort has been made to re-design building interfaces and connect the various hidden courtyards and cobblestone alleys of the old town – making it a pleasure to explore the town on foot. And for the outdoor enthusiasts, there’s an almost inexhaustible supply of hiking trails, mountain bike routes and quality golf courses in the area.
Old and new, traditional charm and contemporary sophistication, all set in a breathtaking natural landscape – that’s Stellenbosch.
